Pegasys has gradually been expanding its range and now, with version 4 of TMPGEnc Xpress, has introduced twice the power of the predecessor with a host of new features.

Once the software is installed, the interface is simplicity itself, with a four-step encoding path – Start, Input, Output and Encode – along with a settings template that will save you having to fill in all the tiresome specifications. You can now input Windows XP Media Center files (DVR-MS) alongside DVD video files, DVD-VR, plus support for High Definition camcorders.
In addition you can input and output most common formats like DivX 6 AVI, MPEG-1/2/4, QuickTime (MOV), and Windows Media (WMV/WMV-HD/WMA). However, to decode QuickTime you will need QuickTime 7.x or later.
If you’re on the move and want to transport your videos on to your iPod, PSP or PDA, then it’s a matter of moments to achieve this via the MPEG-4 ISO and H.264 file formats. DivV videos can also be encoded and decoded and you can even extract MP3 audio from a DivX video file. There’s no shortage of audio-only formats such as WAV, MPEG-1 Audio Layer II and III, Dolby Digital, Windows Media Audio and the AIFF format for the Mac OS, but there is still no support for more than 2 audio channels.
At the source stage, new functions have been added so you can now import and create a slideshow complete with transition effects and audio background. Multiple files can be imported simultaneously without having to validate each clip registration and subtitle streams can be imported from a DVD (although you can’t create subtitles for output).
As well as encoding, TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress’s other primary role is editing and here too there have been further enhancements over its predecessor, thanks to a revamped editor engine. Scene changes are automatically detected and there are some new controls: a histogram with narrow and full range display options, a vectorscope for easier colour control, a colour correction filter plus high-speed thumbnail viewing and scrolling.
Clips can be further sub-divided into smaller clips, single video frames can be captured as picture files, keyframe insertion can be done automatically and there’s a 50-level undo/redo option so you can easily repair all your mistakes!
Finally, there are about 20 audio and video filters to play with (including contour, Gaussian blur and intelligent sharpness) and each video clip can have a fade-in and fade-out effect with custom colour-blending. Fans of earlier versions will be delighted that old favourites, MPEG Tools and Batch Encoder Tools, have been preserved.
